Step 1: Notify Your Employer
Report your injury to your employer as soon as possible. This may involve completing a workplace incident report documenting what happened, when, and how. Early reporting helps streamline your claim and ensures you can access treatment sooner.
Step 2: Medical Review
Once your workplace injury has been reported, your first priority must be to seek medical attention immediately. Depending on the injury’s severity, this could mean first aid, a visit to a GP, or hospital care. When you see your doctor or medical professional, be sure to clearly state the injury occurred at work. They will then be able to issue a Certificate of Capacity, which is essential for your claim as it outlines your injury, required treatment, and what work tasks you can and cannot perform.

Step 3: Notify the Insurer / Lodge the Claim
Lodging a formal claim is the next step in your recovery journey. You can obtain the required claim form from your employer's insurer's website or directly from your employer. Ensure the form is completed accurately, detailing your injury and how it occurred.
The claim, which can be lodged by you, your employer, or a representative, must be submitted to the insurer alongside your essential Certificate of Capacity and any relevant injury documentation.
Step 4: Stay in Contact During Assessment
The insurer will review your claim and may request additional information. They are required to provide written acknowledgement and outline the next steps. Continue following your treatment plan during this time.
Step 5: Claim Determination & Benefits
The insurer will either approve or deny your claim. If approved, you may be entitled to cover medical expenses, receive weekly payments if you are unable to work, and access rehabilitation or support services. If your claim is denied, you have the right to appeal or seek advice from a workers’ compensation regulator or a lawyer.
